Power Struggle

So, we’re back on a load shedding schedule. Yes, even on the platteland we also have load shedding. Although, our hours seem better than other areas. We only have beurtkrag on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6am to 8am; give or take a few minutes.

It’s funny how quickly we’ve grown accustomed to it. I love showering in the mornings – it just wakes me up. Now I tend to bath at night so that I’m all warm and snuggly for bed. Also, because of no power early on those mornings, there is hardly any pressure in our home water supply – so showering really is out of the question. We live on a farm and our water supply is from a giant aqueduct. We have a schedule when we can fill the dams and water tanks from the canal. Unfortunately there is only a slight drop from the water tank to the house, so we have pumps installed to pump water to our home.

Sometimes I forget about the power though, and end up flicking light switches and cursing the short life span of light bulbs nowadays. Also, this means no early weather report for me – so I just do the layer thing and look like a pink Eskimo. At work I start peeling off the sweaters, jackets and scarves that I had bundled around me.

Is it just me, or have I been getting colder faster since falling pregnant? I was usually the last one to grab a jersey… but lately. Visitors mention that my lab is so nice and warm. (I switched off the aircon) Henk looks at me funny when I wear socks to bed. As soon as it gets dark, I start looking for a sweater. If the weather report is anything under 25ºC, I wear jeans [I'm usually in a skirt or three quater pants ;-) ]
