Had a management review last week and all (most of) the lab managers from our costaj region attended. This free trip to the Mother City gave me the chance to watch Harry Potter! On the big screen! With popcorn! (We don’t have a kino here in the Platteland)

So while chilling in the meeting, one of the ladies leans over and asks me if I’m aware that there are allegations that J.K. Rowling is a satanist. I knew this to be an email hoax; but didn’t feel like defending it directly. I know this woman; used to work with her. She’s the type who recoils at the thought of having a black colour scheme for a wedding. Or *gasp* painting your nails black. Honestly, it’s just a colour (or lack there-of. God also created it)
My answer? “and Neil Diamond is a Jew, but I’m still going to his concert.”

It’s not over yet. A few hours later she tells me how her son had written a letter to Santa, but he’s changing his mind now; of course they already bought the kid the original gift. I just shook my head.

I still feel uncomfortable telling Lili about Santa. I want her to know and understand the Christian meaning of Christmas, the symbolism of the tree, and why we give gifts. And eventually the irony of the date.

So yeah, my kid will probably spoil Santa for the other kids.

#49.    Make Christmas Lunch from scratch

And it came out Fabulous!

We planned on a cold lunch. Mom in law made leg of lamb (it’s a given and there’s no getting out of it). Oh, and she made a noodle-curry salad that Dad in law wanted. The rest was all my cooking 😉

Made stuffed chicken breasts that I sliced into ‘wheels’ when it cooled and set a bit. Made little meatballs (Henk’s order); filled eggs and ‘groen balletjies’ – recipes in Kook en Geniet; Maryke’s potato salad; and found a new trifle recipe in Huisgenoot. Couldn’t find any meringue in Spar, so I made my own – nearly burned out my hand mixer in the process. Who knew 4 egg whites can fluff up so much! We’re still munching on leftover meringues. (Will post the trifle recipe soon.)

Splurged a bit with the decorations – theme colours were silver, grey and blue. See my DIY napkin rings here. Hung some silver and blue balls from the ceiling, silver crackers on the table, silver chocolate balls and silver candles formed the a little centrepiece. And I actually had to rent the napkins from the events planner since I couldn’t find any in our shops o_O

You know people are enjoying your food when silence dawns on your table.

Next year it’s a Maré Christmas.

#76 Have annual Christmas photo shoot with Henk and Amelia (1/3) Completed!

I think we all can say that money is tight this year. And with Henk working every single Saturday, and my schedule when on call being quite unpredictable thus un-plan-able, I decided to have us do DIY Christmas pics this year.

I fished out a white sheet that sometimes doubles as a tablecloth – my sheets aren’t white, every colour except white ok. I had Amelia’s little outfit planned, was still head scratching over what I was going to wear and whether to buy a few Santa hats from a street vendor.

But sometimes spontaneous is best. A few Sundays ago, that afternoon we drove to a friends’ two towns away for coffee. Lush grass and large old trees surround their house. The day was warm, but not hot, the cool breeze mild and refreshing. Picture perfect and idyllic. Amelia was hobbling around chasing some chickens while we lounged and caught up with chitchat.

There and then I told our friend to take our Christmas pictures, there under that tree, facing that way.

I am so chuffed with the results. We had a few bloopers as expected: Amelia wondering off after a stray chicken; A dog tried to steal some screen time; no-one looking in the same direction etc. but it wasn’t long before we got the money shot.

Merry Festive Season Everybody!

We’re back from our mini Holiday at my parents’ house. We took 2 days longer to get back. We broke the trip up into stops – didn’t want to be on the road so long with Amelia. Both to and fro we stayed a night (or two… or three) at Blackrock, where Henk’s sister, Riana, and her husband, Kobus, are.

It feels funny to say this, but I really missed my bed. My back was getting knotty and I was getting cranky (more so than usual), I missed home and wanted to leave the 30th already. We only left Kobus and Riana’s on the 1st.

The road wasn’t as busy as I feared it would be. A lot of people were probably waiting for the weekend before tripping back home. Glad we missed that rush. Still is a heck of a long way to travel though.

Here are a few piccies of our Christmas.

We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas, and a heart full of cheer.

Our day was very chilled.

We all went to early church service: Mom and Hugo, Ouma Alta, Henk, Amelia and I. Amelia tried to sing along and preached louder than the dominee.

Lunch was cold turkey, gammon, salads and Mom’s infamous trifle – what’s Christmas at Mom’s house without trifle.

Present wise, I think this year was a practical gift year: I got an automatic bread maker and birthday calender; Mom got a foot massager and rice cooker; Amelia got clothes and my Granny got a Robbie Williams DVD. There was also the usual chocolates and aerosol gifts, but not a pair of socks in sight, no soap on a rope – just a lot of picture frames.

All in all it was a relaxed day without too many expectations. Next year Amelia will be older and will probably invoke santa hysteria.

May you have a Happy Holiday and not overdo the stuffing.
